Just two months after the Vegas Pro 10.0d update, Sony as released a 10.0e one. You’d think such a quick update would just be bug fixes, but it’s not. Support for several more camera formats has been added. And that’s not all. Changes in this update release include:
- Support for LPCM audio in MVC files, 24p video in MVC files, and 50p/60p video in AVC files (e.g, such as from Sony HXR-NX3D1U camera).
- Support for reading Omneon Spectrum RDD9 MXF files.
- Support for creating IMX MXF files compatible with Sony eVTR deck.
- The Burn Blu-ray Disc feature has been updated for compliance with the Blu-ray Disc specification. You can render 3D projects to a Blu-ray 3D Disc image file (.iso) from the timeline (Tools > Burn Disc > Blu-ray Disc). (Intended for commercial BD-ROM preparation testing.)
- Increased bit rate on built-in MVC templates and added 720-50p MVC template.
And, of course, there are some bug fixes included.

Sony has released Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. This latest “studio” edition of Vegas continues to close the gap between it and Vegas Pro. The list of updates looks awfully familiar to the one we saw for Vegas Pro 10.0d. And for an added bonus, the new VMS comes with a pair of 3D glasses to use along with the stereoscopic 3D tool.
Here’s a partial list what’s new:
- Stereoscopic 3D editing, upload to YouTube 3D, and 3D Blu-ray Disc burning.
- New Titles & Text plug-in.
- New video plug-in SDK with updated controls for keyframe animation.
- Added support for 50p and 60p projects, capture, and print to tape
- Audio event effects
- Improved usability of the Trimmer and Video Preview windows
- Device Explorer improvements
- Improved performance when reading QuickTime AVC and QuickTime AVC/H.264 video
- Added support for reading MVC video
- Added support for rendering MVC video with the Sony AVC/MVC plug-in
- Added support for reading MPO (multiple picture object) 3D still images and sweep panorama images
- Improved support for GPU-accelerated AVC rendering using the Sony AVC/MVC plug-in
See the Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 page for more details. What do you think, Vegas Pro users? Would you consider stepping “down” to the Studio edition, given how far it’s come? Or is there still enough in Pro for you to pay the higher price tag?

Sony’s Stereoscopic 3D Workflow webinar finished moments ago. The presentation is expected to be archived and available online within two weeks on the Training page at Sony’s website, although there was a momentary interruption in the live stream that may or may not have corrupted their file up to that point. In any case, here are a few notes what was discussed by the host, Sony Creative Software trainer Gary Rebholz.

If you haven’t already, be sure to download the Vegas Pro 10.0d update since that is when the stereoscopic 3D tools were added. In case it needs to be said, this webinar will not apply to earlier versions of Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio. Vegas Video Help will soon have a tutorial on achieving similar results (albeit, with more work) in those programs.

Its Senior Editor D. Eric Franks has created another Sony Vegas tutorial for the Digital Juice website. This time, he combines an animation from one of DJ’s Motion Designer Toolkit, Vegas track motion, and the Ray FX from Sony Vegas Pro 9. Of course, you can use any basic animation or still image for the base if you don’t have the animation used in the tutorial. And if you’re on a previous version of Vegas, the track motion Glow or 2D Shadow options will provide something at least similar to the Ray FX.
