Just two months after the Vegas Pro 10.0d update, Sony as released a 10.0e one. You’d think such a quick update would just be bug fixes, but it’s not. Support for several more camera formats has been added. And that’s not all. Changes in this update release include:

Support for LPCM audio in MVC files, 24p video in MVC files, and 50p/60p video in AVC files (e.g, such as from Sony HXR-NX3D1U camera).

Support for reading Omneon Spectrum RDD9 MXF files.

Support for creating IMX MXF files compatible with Sony eVTR deck.

The Burn Blu-ray Disc feature has been updated for compliance with the Blu-ray Disc specification. You can render 3D projects to a Blu-ray 3D Disc image file (.iso) from the timeline (Tools > Burn Disc > Blu-ray Disc). (Intended for commercial BD-ROM preparation testing.)

Increased bit rate on built-in MVC templates and added 720-50p MVC template.

And, of course, there are some bug fixes included.

Head over to the Vegas Pro update page to download the update.

Sony has released Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. This latest “studio” edition of Vegas continues to close the gap between it and Vegas Pro. The list of updates looks awfully familiar to the one we saw for Vegas Pro 10.0d. And for an added bonus, the new VMS comes with a pair of 3D glasses to use along with the stereoscopic 3D tool.

Here’s a partial list what’s new:

Stereoscopic 3D editing, upload to YouTube 3D, and 3D Blu-ray Disc burning.

New Titles & Text plug-in.

New video plug-in SDK with updated controls for keyframe animation.

Added support for 50p and 60p projects, capture, and print to tape

Audio event effects

Improved usability of the Trimmer and Video Preview windows

Device Explorer improvements

Improved performance when reading QuickTime AVC and QuickTime AVC/H.264 video

Added support for reading MVC video

Added support for rendering MVC video with the Sony AVC/MVC plug-in

Added support for reading MPO (multiple picture object) 3D still images and sweep panorama images

Improved support for GPU-accelerated AVC rendering using the Sony AVC/MVC plug-in

See the Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 page for more details. What do you think, Vegas Pro users? Would you consider stepping “down” to the Studio edition, given how far it’s come? Or is there still enough in Pro for you to pay the higher price tag?

Sony’s Stereoscopic 3D Workflow webinar finished moments ago. The presentation is expected to be archived and available online within two weeks on the Training page at Sony’s website, although there was a momentary interruption in the live stream that may or may not have corrupted their file up to that point. In any case, here are a few notes what was discussed by the host, Sony Creative Software trainer Gary Rebholz.

Gary first covered the three types of 3D that can be edited in Vegas Pro 10.0d:

Two video files from two camera that were used side-by-side

One file with two video streams

One file with one video stream with the two sides separated somehow (usually side-by-side)

During the course of the webinar, Gary demonstrated two 3D cameras from Sony, the 3D Bloggie and the HDR-TD10.

From there, the presentation covered:

Adding the left- and right-side videos to a project

Setting the Stereoscopic 3D mode for the project

Pairing the left- and right-side videos

Adjusting vertical offset to correct misaligned camera angles (unnecessary for single-camera setups)

Placing and moving 2D content such as titles and images in stereoscopic 3D space

Delivering the rendered 3D video directly to DVD, Blu-ray, and Youtube

Gary finished with a plug for the Seminar Series DVD which covers stereoscopic 3D more in-depth and by reminding the viewer that today is the last day to save 30% on Vegas Pro 10, new and upgrade versions.

Following the webinar, Gary answered several questions that were submitted while he spoke. Here are some brief paraphrases of the questions and answers (the format did not make it easy to copy text, and Gary spoke the answers out loud anyhow):

Q: Does the left side have to be on top, and the right side on bottom?
A: Yes. Absolutely required. Will look “cross-eyed” otherwise.

Q: Is this a specific 3D display [likely referring to Gary's setup].
A: It was a standard PC monitor. This is why Vegas has several modes to display on any monitor.

Q: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter be applied to things other than titles images, photoshop, etc?
A: Yes, but it will not “turn it into” 3D.

Q: Similar question: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter turn 2D media into 3D media?
A: No. Will put it in 3D space, but not make it 3D.

Q: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter be used on Bloggie footage? Are there tools for tuning 3D depth alignment?
A: Yes, it can be used on any piece of media in the project. Adjustments can be made over time by first clicking the Animate button next to the setting to keyframe.

Q: Can Vegas be used to render HDR-TD10 left and right footage two separate MOV files?
A: Yes. Go to File -> Render As, and change the Stereoscopic 3D mode on the Project tab.

In case it needs to be said, this webinar will not apply to earlier versions of Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio. Vegas Video Help will soon have a tutorial on achieving similar results (albeit, with more work) in those programs.

To get an early look at some of the changes in Vegas Pro 9, head over to Ed Troxel’s website and download his Volume 7 Issue 1 newsletter where he mentions some new features, changes in default behavior, and the once-rumored now (apparently confirmed) purchase of effects developer VelvetMatter (the likely creators of Vegas’ ProType Titler).

Some observations based on Ed’s newletter:

Welcome addition: Match Event Length button for Generated Media.

Destined to be a Frequently Asked Question: “How come my events only have three thumbnails?”

Destined to be a Frequently Made Complaint: “I hate the new color scheme (even though I can change it but didn’t bother to ask how)!”

Great addition but most won’t notice or remember: Temporary enable snapping using the Shift key.

At any rate, it looks like there are some interesting changes and editing tricks here that Sony didn’t mention on their official list. Whenever I get Vegas Pro 9, I may need to look through the manual / online help just to be sure I’m using all the time savers available since there seem to be several new ones.

Today, Sony announced the upcoming release of Vegas Pro 9, although the product itself is not yet available. Sony is taking pre-orders for the program and plans to start shipping on May 11th with download availability the same day. This announcement, which first took place at this year’s NAB convention, breaks the tradition in which Sony Creative Software has always been available the same day Sony publicly confirmed a product was even being worked on (let alone completed).

The new features mentioned in the specifications for Vegas Pro 9 are:

4K support for frame sizes up to 4096×4096

Support for capturing directly to XDCAM-compatible MXF files from supported SDK sources

Automatic source media adjustment for working with mismatched media

Enhanced 32-bit floating point video levels mode designed to work like 8-bit mode but with the precision needed for 10-bit and higher sources and render formats

Gradient wipe transition

Glint, Rays, Defocus, Starburst, Soft Contrast, and Fill Light video effects

Place and edit audio without quantizing to frame boundaries, while still quantizing video edits

Multichannel audio adds from Trimmer Window

Includes native 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vegas Pro software

Enhanced user interface with layout presets

Impressive lighting effects including Glint, Rays, and Fill Light

Darker color palette UI for optimized viewing

Audio Mixing and Color Correction default layouts

Browse XDCAM EX and AVCHD contents in Device Explorer

Native XDCAM EX reading and import

Support for gigapixel size pictures

Read and save DPX, OpenEXR, and Microsoft HD Photo formats

Open and edit RED ONE™ files on the timeline

Device Explorer for AVCHD and XDCAM EX devices

For a limited (<del datetime="2009-04-21T16:59:26+00:00">and unspecified</del> until June 30th) time, Sony is offering an additional bonus. First-time buyers of Sony Vegas Pro 9 will also get the Sony Seminar Series training DVDs. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Vegas Pro or upgrading from Vegas Movie Studio, you will have a choice between Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio, the Sony Sound Effects Series sampler, or the Sampler Pack from third-party effects maker NewBlue.

I’ve seen mention of the pre-order coming with $50 off the standard price, but I’m not ready to buy yet, so I can’t confirm this. I don’t see any mention of it on the order page. Also, Sony generally offers about $100 off during the first month of any Vegas release, though that early bird discount is usually not mentioned on Sony’s website (other than in the knowledge base). Rather, in the past, it has been advertised to registered users via an e-mail anywhere from a day to a few weeks after release. If Sony will offer that discount this time around and how it fits into the pre-order arrangement, I don’t know.

One more “first,” it appears that there will not be a new version of DVD Architect with this new version of Vegas. I suppose we got that early when the free DVD Architect 5.0 upgrade was released in order to incorporate Blu-ray disc authoring.

For quite some time now, Sony Vegas has been scriptable — it’s a program that can be programmed. Most, though not, of its elements (tracks, events, FX, etc) can be accessed via JScript and C# in order to make the process of editing go faster. There are hundreds if not thousands of free scripts that handle a multitude of relatively simple tasks.

Then there are the mega scripts — scripts that are essentially programs in themselves, complete with tabbed interfaces, that perform dozens of tasks to shorten your workload. Because of the amount of work that goes into them (and the amount of work they save you, though), these large scale scripts are not free. And they may even be out of reach for many Vegas beginners. The two biggest kids on the block are VASST’s Ultimate S for $170 and Ed Troxel’s Excalibur for $120.

But for a limited time (I don’t know how limited — their site doesn’t say), media developer and retailer Digital Juice is selling Excalibur for 50% off. You can see Digital Juice’s website or the Excalibur site for a full list of its features. Pay close attention to the version you request — Excalibur 6 works with Sony Vegas Pro 8. For Vegas 6 and 7, you’ll want Excalibur 5.5.

Also note that if you are using Vegas Movie Studio, whether standard, Platinum, or Platinum Pro Pack, your edition of Vegas does not have scripting; therefore, Excalibur will not work for you.

Sony Creative Software has released Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c as well as Sony Vegas Pro 8.1. 8.0c adds new features to the 32-bit application for broadcast workflows, and 8.1 is the long-awaited version optimized for 64-bit operating systems.

Vegas Pro 8.c

The Vegas Pro 8.0c software now features extensive support for the new PDW-1500 XDCAM deck and the newest Sony video camera formats including XDCAM HD 4:2:2. The Vegas Pro software scales intuitively on the user’s system, ensuring that it takes full advantage of all hardware capabilities. The new Smart Render feature supports most news acquisition formats, providing the ability for news corporations to get content to air rapidly. Newly enhanced trimmer tools support broadcast editing workflows, while the new Fit-to-Fill function enables broadcasters to automate cuts to match content to the exact seconds allotted for their story. Vegas Pro 8.0c also now includes 24p support for those working with film framerate style content.

Vegas Pro 8.1

Vegas Pro 8.1 has been engineered to take full advantage of the 64-bit operating system to enable users to work with multifaceted, memory-intensive projects. The Vegas Pro 8.1 64-bit program is a standalone application that does not require users to have Vegas Pro 8.0 preinstalled on their system. However, Vegas Pro 8.1 has been designed with backwards compatibility with the 32-bit Vegas Pro application so users can create a project in one platform and open it in the other. This provides users with the ability to work with a 64-bit version for the performance gains, but also work in the 32-bit system for continued broad hardware and codec support.

Both updates are free for registered users of Sony Vegas Pro 8.0. Read the full press release and download the updates from the Sony Creative Software website.
