Just two months after the Vegas Pro 10.0d update, Sony as released a 10.0e one. You’d think such a quick update would just be bug fixes, but it’s not. Support for several more camera formats has been added. And that’s not all. Changes in this update release include:

Support for LPCM audio in MVC files, 24p video in MVC files, and 50p/60p video in AVC files (e.g, such as from Sony HXR-NX3D1U camera).

Support for reading Omneon Spectrum RDD9 MXF files.

Support for creating IMX MXF files compatible with Sony eVTR deck.

The Burn Blu-ray Disc feature has been updated for compliance with the Blu-ray Disc specification. You can render 3D projects to a Blu-ray 3D Disc image file (.iso) from the timeline (Tools > Burn Disc > Blu-ray Disc). (Intended for commercial BD-ROM preparation testing.)

Increased bit rate on built-in MVC templates and added 720-50p MVC template.

And, of course, there are some bug fixes included.

Head over to the Vegas Pro update page to download the update.

Sony has released Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. This latest “studio” edition of Vegas continues to close the gap between it and Vegas Pro. The list of updates looks awfully familiar to the one we saw for Vegas Pro 10.0d. And for an added bonus, the new VMS comes with a pair of 3D glasses to use along with the stereoscopic 3D tool.

Here’s a partial list what’s new:

Stereoscopic 3D editing, upload to YouTube 3D, and 3D Blu-ray Disc burning.

New Titles & Text plug-in.

New video plug-in SDK with updated controls for keyframe animation.

Added support for 50p and 60p projects, capture, and print to tape

Audio event effects

Improved usability of the Trimmer and Video Preview windows

Device Explorer improvements

Improved performance when reading QuickTime AVC and QuickTime AVC/H.264 video

Added support for reading MVC video

Added support for rendering MVC video with the Sony AVC/MVC plug-in

Added support for reading MPO (multiple picture object) 3D still images and sweep panorama images

Improved support for GPU-accelerated AVC rendering using the Sony AVC/MVC plug-in

See the Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11 page for more details. What do you think, Vegas Pro users? Would you consider stepping “down” to the Studio edition, given how far it’s come? Or is there still enough in Pro for you to pay the higher price tag?

Sony’s Stereoscopic 3D Workflow webinar finished moments ago. The presentation is expected to be archived and available online within two weeks on the Training page at Sony’s website, although there was a momentary interruption in the live stream that may or may not have corrupted their file up to that point. In any case, here are a few notes what was discussed by the host, Sony Creative Software trainer Gary Rebholz.

Gary first covered the three types of 3D that can be edited in Vegas Pro 10.0d:

Two video files from two camera that were used side-by-side

One file with two video streams

One file with one video stream with the two sides separated somehow (usually side-by-side)

During the course of the webinar, Gary demonstrated two 3D cameras from Sony, the 3D Bloggie and the HDR-TD10.

From there, the presentation covered:

Adding the left- and right-side videos to a project

Setting the Stereoscopic 3D mode for the project

Pairing the left- and right-side videos

Adjusting vertical offset to correct misaligned camera angles (unnecessary for single-camera setups)

Placing and moving 2D content such as titles and images in stereoscopic 3D space

Delivering the rendered 3D video directly to DVD, Blu-ray, and Youtube

Gary finished with a plug for the Seminar Series DVD which covers stereoscopic 3D more in-depth and by reminding the viewer that today is the last day to save 30% on Vegas Pro 10, new and upgrade versions.

Following the webinar, Gary answered several questions that were submitted while he spoke. Here are some brief paraphrases of the questions and answers (the format did not make it easy to copy text, and Gary spoke the answers out loud anyhow):

Q: Does the left side have to be on top, and the right side on bottom?
A: Yes. Absolutely required. Will look “cross-eyed” otherwise.

Q: Is this a specific 3D display [likely referring to Gary's setup].
A: It was a standard PC monitor. This is why Vegas has several modes to display on any monitor.

Q: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter be applied to things other than titles images, photoshop, etc?
A: Yes, but it will not “turn it into” 3D.

Q: Similar question: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter turn 2D media into 3D media?
A: No. Will put it in 3D space, but not make it 3D.

Q: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter be used on Bloggie footage? Are there tools for tuning 3D depth alignment?
A: Yes, it can be used on any piece of media in the project. Adjustments can be made over time by first clicking the Animate button next to the setting to keyframe.

Q: Can Vegas be used to render HDR-TD10 left and right footage two separate MOV files?
A: Yes. Go to File -> Render As, and change the Stereoscopic 3D mode on the Project tab.

If you haven’t already, be sure to download the Vegas Pro 10.0d update since that is when the stereoscopic 3D tools were added. In case it needs to be said, this webinar will not apply to earlier versions of Vegas or Vegas Movie Studio. Vegas Video Help will soon have a tutorial on achieving similar results (albeit, with more work) in those programs.

Its Senior Editor D. Eric Franks has created another Sony Vegas tutorial for the Digital Juice website. This time, he combines an animation from one of DJ’s Motion Designer Toolkit, Vegas track motion, and the Ray FX from Sony Vegas Pro 9. Of course, you can use any basic animation or still image for the base if you don’t have the animation used in the tutorial. And if you’re on a previous version of Vegas, the track motion Glow or 2D Shadow options will provide something at least similar to the Ray FX.
