Vegas 10.0d Stereoscopic 3D Webinar Summary
May 31st, 2011 by Rob Strobbe | Filed under News.Sony’s Stereoscopic 3D Workflow webinar finished moments ago. The presentation is expected to be archived and available online within two weeks on the Training page at Sony’s website, although there was a momentary interruption in the live stream that may or may not have corrupted their file up to that point. In any case, here are a few notes what was discussed by the host, Sony Creative Software trainer Gary Rebholz.
Gary first covered the three types of 3D that can be edited in Vegas Pro 10.0d:
- Two video files from two camera that were used side-by-side
- One file with two video streams
- One file with one video stream with the two sides separated somehow (usually side-by-side)
During the course of the webinar, Gary demonstrated two 3D cameras from Sony, the 3D Bloggie and the HDR-TD10.
From there, the presentation covered:
- Adding the left- and right-side videos to a project
- Setting the Stereoscopic 3D mode for the project
- Pairing the left- and right-side videos
- Adjusting vertical offset to correct misaligned camera angles (unnecessary for single-camera setups)
- Placing and moving 2D content such as titles and images in stereoscopic 3D space
- Delivering the rendered 3D video directly to DVD, Blu-ray, and Youtube
Gary finished with a plug for the Seminar Series DVD which covers stereoscopic 3D more in-depth and by reminding the viewer that today is the last day to save 30% on Vegas Pro 10, new and upgrade versions.
Following the webinar, Gary answered several questions that were submitted while he spoke. Here are some brief paraphrases of the questions and answers (the format did not make it easy to copy text, and Gary spoke the answers out loud anyhow):
Q: Does the left side have to be on top, and the right side on bottom?
A: Yes. Absolutely required. Will look “cross-eyed” otherwise.
Q: Is this a specific 3D display [likely referring to Gary's setup].
A: It was a standard PC monitor. This is why Vegas has several modes to display on any monitor.
Q: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter be applied to things other than titles images, photoshop, etc?
A: Yes, but it will not “turn it into” 3D.
Q: Similar question: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter turn 2D media into 3D media?
A: No. Will put it in 3D space, but not make it 3D.
Q: Can the stereoscopic 3D adjust filter be used on Bloggie footage? Are there tools for tuning 3D depth alignment?
A: Yes, it can be used on any piece of media in the project. Adjustments can be made over time by first clicking the Animate button next to the setting to keyframe.
Q: Can Vegas be used to render HDR-TD10 left and right footage two separate MOV files?
A: Yes. Go to File -> Render As, and change the Stereoscopic 3D mode on the Project tab.
